Why ChatGPT recommends your competitor and not you
Updated October 17, 2026
It’s frustrating: you’ve done great work for years, and ChatGPT names the business down the road. It’s rarely about who’s better. It’s about who the internet describes better.
Reason 1. They have more (and newer) reviews
AI tools read reviews to decide who people like. A competitor with 400 recent reviews will usually beat one with 30 from three years ago, even if the work is the same.
What to do: ask every happy customer, every week. Make it easy with a direct link to your review page.
Reason 2. Their listings say clearly what they do
If their Google listing says “Emergency plumber in Columbus, water heaters and leak repair” and yours says “Quality solutions for all your needs”, AI knows who to name.
What to do: use plain words: what you do, where, and for whom. List every service separately.
Reason 3. Their details are the same everywhere
Old addresses, two phone numbers or a slightly different name on Yelp make AI less sure you’re one business. Unsure means not named.
What to do: write one official version of your details and use it on every listing.
Reason 4. Other websites talk about them
Local news, city blogs, “best of” lists, community groups. AI trusts businesses that other people mention.
What to do: find the “best in town” lists for your trade and ask to be considered. Offer a seasonal tip to your local news site.
Reason 5. Your website hides the answer
If your homepage is a big photo and a slogan, AI can’t tell what you do or where. Some websites even block AI tools by accident.
What to do: say what you do and where in the first sentence, put prices and answers to common questions in plain text, and check that your site doesn’t block search and AI tools.
The honest part
None of this is a trick, and nobody can guarantee a spot. But each of these fixes gives AI one more reason to name you, and most of them cost nothing.
