Do reviews help you get recommended by AI?

Updated October 17, 2026

Short answer: yes. When AI tools decide which local businesses to name, reviews are one of the clearest signals they have. And it’s not only the star rating: the words customers use matter too.

What AI looks for in reviews

  • How many, and how recent. A steady flow of new reviews says you’re open and busy.
  • The rating, of course.
  • What people mention: the service (“fixed our water heater”), the town (“best in Tampa”), the staff (“Maria was great”). These words help AI match you to the questions people ask.
  • Your replies. Answering every review, good and bad, shows a real, caring business.

How to get more reviews, the right way

  1. Ask right after the job, when the customer is happiest.
  2. Send a direct link to your Google review page, so it takes 30 seconds.
  3. Ask everyone, not just the customers you think will be happy.
  4. Reply to every review within a couple of days.

What not to do

  • Never pay for reviews, and never offer discounts in return. It’s against Google’s rules and, in the US, against the law (the FTC’s rule on fake reviews).
  • Never write fake reviews or ask family to. Google removes them, and it can hurt your listing.
  • Don’t tell customers what to write. You can ask them to mention what you did for them, but the words must be theirs.

How long it takes

A few new reviews a week, every week, adds up. Within a few months the difference shows, for customers and for AI.
